Boathouse Sushi

<< Back

Since opening in 2004, Boathouse Sushi in Rohnert Park CA (right off Rohnert Park Expressway) has become one of the most popular restaurants in town, and that success has led to the opening of another Boathouse Sushi in Santa Rosa CA on Mendocino Avenue.   Their reputation has been built on fresh sushi prepared in a creatively playful way that appeals to western tastes plus a fun atmosphere and full bar equally perfect for dates, large groups, and Rohnert Park’s youthful set.

While it’s true that this restaurant is family-friendly, with a kids menu for coloring, it’s hard to deny that local 20-somethings, (and those that still feel like one), have helped make Boathouse Sushi a hit, drawn by its fun atmosphere, specialty cocktails, plenty of room for big parties, and young attractive waitstaff (some of which have a loyal customer following who ask for them by name).

The driving creative force behind the achievement of Boathouse Sushi to become a popular destination restaurant in so short a time is owner Catherine Do, a graduate of Sonoma State University, whose travels in Asia continue to inspire a pan-Asian menu combined with western influences for a broader allure than other local sushi restaurants.

Catherine shares, "We’re proud of how Boathouse Sushi is a favorite for so many people who initially thought sushi was something they couldn’t enjoy. We get comments all the time from people saying they never liked sushi until they had it here."  Boathouse Sushi accomplishes this by enhancing otherwise plain sushi with complimentary ingredients and gourmet sauces.  For example, you can order traditional tuna sashimi here, or you can have the Truffle Albacore, which is seared albacore sashimi with daikon sprouts and freshly shredded daikon radish paired with a truffle ponzu (citrus-soy) sauce.  Had your heart set on spicy tuna roll? You can get that here, or you can upgrade to the Train Wreck Roll, a monster in both size and popularity, which features spicy tuna and shrimp tempura with avocado, unagi, tobiko caviar and topped with creamy-spicy yum yum sauce.

The cooked seafood here is good too. One of the most popular recent menu additions is their grilled Atlantic salmon with macadamia nuts, topped by a creamy celery sauce and served with asparagus and carrots.  Had lunch in mind? Try the spicy ahi tuna burger which is cooked using fresh chopped sushi tuna served with avocado and sautéed mushroom.  There’s also lots of noodle items on the menu so your vegetarian friends can come along.

The food pedigree here has a solid foundation in Japanese tradition. The sushi bar is overseen by Miho Akasaka, a sushi chef originally from the Osaka area, and she brings to Boathouse Sushi the high Japanese standards for freshness and presentation. Combined with this are Catherine Do’s culinary travels in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam making for a broader pan-Asian menu which can include crowd-pleasing items like fresh spring rolls.  Then add your own culinary recommendations to their menu. Catherine says, "We really listen to our customers, whether it’s with surveys we do a few times a year, or their spontaneous suggestions on what they’d like to see. That’s helped us do really well."  For example, it was a customer’s suggestion that led to one of their most popular appetizers, playfully named ‘chips and salsa’, which is a slice of fresh tempura fried carrot topped with avocado, generous amounts of spicy tuna, and a spicy aioli sauce.

The hip, lively scene here with its full bar with seating at the front window has proven a worthy heir for fans of Tex Wasabi in Santa Rosa CA which closed down.  In addition to top brand spirits, Boathouse Sushi customers come to have fun with creative cocktails like the "Explosive Pineapple Bomb".   But true to its Japanese roots, Boathouse Sushi also has a selection of fine sakes, the traditional Japanese rice wine. Always wanted to know more about sakes and how to really enjoy them? Or just want to impress your friends with your superior knowledge of sake the next time you’re out for Japanese? Boathouse Sushi gives sake lessons and tastings.  For just $25 you get to sample every sake they carry and it comes with complimentary appetizer finger foods. Each tasting is limited to 15 or 20 people so call or email them to get in.

So if it’s traditionally prepared sushi you crave, or their fun culinary twist on it, their large space which can easily accommodate your group, or to be part of the festive turnouts of Sonoma County’s young and beautiful, then you can get what you want at Boathouse Sushi in Rohnert Park CA just off Rohnert Park Expressway, or their second location in Santa Rosa CA on Mendocino Ave.  They’re open until 9pm (10pm Friday & Saturday), with happy hour specials 3pm-6pm on weekends.

Boathouse Sushi Capability Reviews

"We’ve tried almost everything on the menu, and had several favorites every time. Finally we settled on the Viva Las Vegas roll and the Bullseye roll as the stand outs. The food is consistently excellent (we go at least once a week) and the service has been nothing short of delightful. The staff is friendly and accommodating and the food is intoxicating and inventive. I recommend this to all my friends and family when they visit."

    Sean, Santa Rosa CA

"We eat here as often as we can. We’ve tried most of the sushi places in Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park and still love this place. Partly it’s the great food. And partly the nice ambience. It just suits us – not pretentious and kind of pan Asian. The food is not meant to be Japanese specifically because there is kind of a mix of flavors and dishes but we have never been disappointed.

Our service has always been excellent. I’d say we come here about monthly for the past two or more years and really enjoy it."

    —Sandra L., Penngrove CA

"I like the ambiance and the service. In fact, when I went in we had a really playful waitress that was actually pretty entertaining. I had the "dirty fries" and the "beef teriyaki." The dirty fries definitely had an interesting flavor. I would try these if you get the chance. The beef was pretty good, too…."

    —Rocky S., Santa Rosa CA

"Really awesome lunch specials. Your choice of rolls, with soup and salad. Get a drink or beer, it’s about $15… for good sushi? that’s a deal. This is one of my favorite lunch places because they’re reasonably priced for good sushi…. of course i will eat there again! "

    —Miss W., Santa Rosa CA

"Mixed drinks are actually pretty awesome (Nice and Strong)"

    —Todd S., Rohnert Park CA

"The food is great. My favorite roll is the Crazy Horse. They also offer a nice deal with two rolls, soup, and a small salad. I hear they have a great happy hour but I have yet to check that out."

    —April R., San Francisco CA

"I thought this place was cute on the inside and we got good service. The lunch special was a great deal. I left very full. They also had a nice selection of beer on draft."

    —Laila P., El Verano CA

"I like this place a lot. I like it because they give you good portions and contemporary takes on sushi and Asian food without ruining it."

    —Courtney M., Rohnert Park CA

"I like this place. Great Atmosphere. Great Service. Great Drinks. Great Food. I’m a devout Dragon Roll lover and theirs was delicious. I also reccomend trying their "Crazy Monkey Roll" Wow. That Grilled Pineapple is just a nice compliment to the Spicy Tuna. Good Stuff."

    —Judith F., Santa Rosa CA

"The BF and I popped in for a quick dinner a couple of weekends ago.

The Wet and Wild Roll is still my favorite. I let him pick the other rolls and they were so so the boathouse roll had a lot going on in it, but didn’t really deliver, and we did the Mexican Roll – just for fun (it was good, but it wasn’t like OMG, I have to have this again)

and then we shared a plater of sashimi. The Tako was surprisingly really good (the BF isn’t usually a fan) the Sake, Maguro and Hamachi were great as well – there were slices of Saba on there as well, I am not personally a fan, but BF said they were tasty.

Justin wasn’t there.. although I’m sure he’s still adorable (shhh Don’t tell my BF) It’s still a fun little place to go."

    —Samanta V., Healdsburg CA

"Nice decor, cool outside patio for when it warms up. Service was attentive and focused. I would have liked a warm hand washing towel like traditional japanese places do, but I survived.

The fish was fresh, and they had a few creative appetizers and drinks I don’t usually see at a sushi place. Full Bar too, nice place."

    —Wendy A., Santa Rosa CA

"Last review I stated that I go here every 6 weeks or so. Lately, my boyfriend has been taking me here once a week, and I have really gotten to explore the menu. I love everything I try. The specials are always great, and the service, impeccable.

If I could reccomend 2 things to anyone going to Boathouse: Get a Lisa!Lisa! Roll, and ask to be seated in Justin’s section! You will fully enjoy your meal."

    —Honest R., Rohnert Park CA

"I LOVE this place. And the reason I love this place is because it is like Comfort sushi for me. It’s the sushi equivalent of a big bowl of chicken soup on a cold day. Macaroni and cheese and all that. So yeah, this isn’t the most awesome crazy super high class sushi ever, but it’s good and they give you a lot.

Get the lunch special, because it’s the best deal and their menu is HUGE. Seriously, it’s really really big with a lot of rolls and fun stuff.

I go here almost every week. Missy is the best server and very quick and great.

    It’s like…sushi for the soul."

    —Kristin N.

"I love boathouse! I went to SSU and used to come here a lot with my boyfriend and I now live in SF while my boyfriend is still in rohnert park so this is where we go when I come up to visit.
The staff is always fast and friendly! The food is fresh and reliable. I espescially love the jalepeno poppers! Most recently I tried the shooters with vodka and a clam at the bottom of the shot. It sounds disgusting but I thought it was delcious.
Boathouse is my number one pick in rohnert park. Also try the one in Santa Rosa. It is smaller on the inside but has a larger patio area on the outside."

    —Allison P., San Francisco CA

"I am a sushi junkie. As such there is no fooling me about what is and what is not excellent Japanese food. This place is the best I’ve found – and I’ve been everywhere from San Jose to Redding. Not only is the food superb, the sake (rice wine) selection is very respectful as well. The best possible waitress is Missy – she is a feisty, petite Angelina Jolie type, she knows the menu and can describe each item to mouth watering precision. Boathouse has a cool atmosphere with elegant decor and a flat screen television playing Aname on mute (with subtitles) and a small bar. Try it; it’s worth the drive from just about anywhere in the Bay Area.

My five stars are for the screaming orgasm I have every time I’m there!

"I’m not some sushi snob that thinks the Japanese will like me better if I shun California rolls. I like white people sushi. It’s got a lot of good options and they all taste really good. Good atmosphere, and the waitresses are usually hot."

    —Alex
